Art Exhibition by Steven Cox

Aderita Artistic Space Gallery and Vale do Lobo Art Gallery are pleased to invite you to the official inauguration and launch of the art exhibition FROTTAGE on the 1st of September from 17:30h to 19:00h at the Art Gallery, located in Vale do Lobo Shopping. The art exhibition will be open to the public from 1st to 31st September 2023, Monday from 14:00h to 18:00h and Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00h to 18:00h.

Admission is free. 

Steven Cox is a Scottish artist known for his creation of abstract mixed media artworks. His paintings explore materiality and incorporate unique mark making techniques. This exhibition titled "Frottage," highlights Cox's endeavour to create surfaces that burst with vivid colours combined with contrasting textures. A notable technique employed by the artist involves him transferring oil paint onto vibrantly coloured and textured canvas surfaces. In a captivating interplay, bold black marks emerge on the canvas as Cox’s technique involves him applying physical pressure to a large plastic sheet of oil paint that is held in front of the canvas’s uneven surface, resulting in a distinctively unique yet striking effect.

Cox’s textured paintings pay homage to the stylistic qualities of colour field painting and process painting. His use of non-traditional tools and methods embraces chance as a fundamental concept in his creative process. His paintings appear both gritty and sublime, and demand both up close inspection as well as viewing from a distance. By combining diverse historical and technical methodologies, Cox explores new possibilities in the realm of abstraction through his experimental handling of technique, colour, and form. He often interrogates the canvas surface and aims to push the boundaries of materiality to create rich and multi-layered compositions. Steven Cox's paintings showcase endless possibilities, for his paintings highlight his determination to continuously explore new and alternative results. Each painting is unique and carefully executed whilst the bold gestures reflect his dedicated and unending performative painting that process that occurs in his studio.

Steven Cox is a Scottish artist who lives and works in Edinburgh, Scotland. Born in 1986 in Aberdeen, he received his BA from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and his MA from Edinburgh College of Art. Solo exhibitions have been with A Hug From the Art World, NY; Halsey McKay Gallery, East Hampton; Annarumma Gallery, Naples, IT; Galleri Benoni, Copenhagen, DK; Galerie Jerome Pauchant, Paris, FR. He has had multiple international group exhibitions and residencies. Cox has been featured, reviewed and profiled in Modern Painters Magazine, ArtNews, ArtInfo, Wall Street International, and Dust Magazine, among others. His artwork is in numerous International collections, including: UBS Bank Art Collection, Rathbone Investment Management, Foundation Collection VR’d Affaux, Lepsien Art Collection, Esposito Art Collection, among others.
