Rui Matos Sculpture Exhibition

Explore the insightful and dramatic sculptures of Rui Matos during the latest exhibition at the Vale do Lobo Art Gallery from 15th March until 7th June.

A selection of sculptures from the "Histórias de Outras Idades" collection by the artist will be on display at the gallery as part of an ongoing collaboration between the resort and the famed São Mamede Gallery.

Born in Lisbon in 1959, Rui Matos lives and works in Portugal, close to Sintra and is known for his sculptures created in various media.  He completed a degree in sculpture from the Faculty of Fine arts in Lisbon and became a Scholar of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 1993.

His first solo exhibition was in 1987 in Lisbon and featured sculptures created in slate, his following exhibitions "First Island" and "Mediterranean" used cast-bronze sculptures, while his first exhibition in stone was in 1991 "Enormity, Sequence and Shipwreck" following the " Transformations- Uncertain Reports", "Memory Objects" and "Incomplete Stories". In 2008 Rui Matos began working in iron with the exhibitions "The Skin of Things", "I transform myself into what I touch", “From Inside” and “Transmutations”.

A selection of iron sculptures from the Histórias de Outras Idades collection by the artist will be on display at the gallery as part of an ongoing collaboration between the resort and the famed São Mamede Gallery. The sculptures by Rui Matos are characterised by his use of expressive shapes and forms to communicate emotions and feelings in a highly distinctive style.

Since the first exhibition of works from the São Mamede gallery was unveiled at the Vale do Lobo Art Gallery in October 2012 there have been a series of different exhibitions on display and the latest is a celebration of this partnership.

This exciting exhibition by Rui Matos promises to be truly memorable, bringing an exciting and thought provoking selection of works to the resort.
